After a couple of weeks off in line with our practice of ‘No Meetings after a Public Holiday’ (Easter Monday) and Anzac Day falling on a Tuesday, it was great to be back at Hectorville Sporting Club for our regular morning meeting.
Guest Speaker: Michael Kassara
This morning we welcomed Michael Kassara and Karmen Petric as guests. Michael was one of the recipients of our Norwood/Morialta Service Above Self Award. His presentation on his studies, extracurricular activities and ambitions was delivered with a maturity beyond his year. It’s always inspiring to hear one of our award recipients speak with a passion, with a view to protecting the environment for the next generation. Karmen is one of Michael’s teachers at Norwood Morialta, and shows great support to her students. Thank you for coming to hear Michael’s presentation, Karmen!
District Conference Wrap-Up
Mark and Mari Thompson, Ian and Suzette Coat and Mina Ward were club attendees at 9520’s District Conference Held at Mt Gambier (27th – 30th April). All plenary sessions were held in the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre, which is right up when it comes to audience comfort. ‘Three’s a Crowd’, students from the James Morrison School of Jazz, provided incidental music and later morphed into a big band, providing music for the Saturday Night Dinner.
Inspirational speakers ranging from John (Swanee) Swann to Siva Ananthan (Rotary in Malaysia) who made us laugh or cry, or sometimes both. There are some great ideas for future Club activities that we will talk about over the next few weeks.
A special mention must go to Mina for traveling a round trip of almost 9000km to be there for the first two days of the conference, arriving in Mt Gambier at 4:30am for an 8am start, delivering her presentation, looking after the youth exchange folk and heading straight home again. Mina; what a machine.
May is a Busy Month!
It’s a busy month ahead! we have two major events coming up in May and one regular:

- Quiz Night this coming Saturday Evening at the Hungarian Club and
- The Reel Event on Sunday arvo, 21 May as well as
- our regular monthly market on the 14th.
Weekly Challenge
Our focus this week is for everyone to put a huge effort into selling tickets for The Reel Event, which is coming up in under 3 weeks.
Your weekly challenge is to sell at least 5 tickets (including your own) and there will be a prize at next week’s meeting for the most sales so far. You’ve got to be in it to win it!

Here are some suggestions for getting bookings:
- Get a group from work together to support a worthy cause.
- Visit one of the other Rotary Clubs in our area for a ‘catch up’ meeting and plug the event.
- Give your Mum tickets for Mother’s Day, and treat her to an afternoon out the following week.
- Know some creative uni or high school students? Treat them to the opportunity.
- Going to your weekly tennis match / book club meeting / ladies lunch? Suggest they all come with you to a great afternoon at the cinema.
- Ask your hairdresser or doctor if you can print and leave some flyers in the foyer
- Does your work have a client email list? Send them the information and ask them to spread the word.
- Haven’t seen your old school friends in a while? Suggest a catch-up over afternoon tea, with some great films afterwards.
- Want to treat your staff for their hard work? Buy ‘thank you’ tickets for them and a friend.
